Mount Madonna School is fortunate to have many talented and graceful dancers among its student and faculty body. Last week, Dancer and dance teacher Lorraine Kinnamon and several students participated in “Santa Cruz Dancing in the Street” in downtown Santa Cruz as part of the local activities surrounding National Dance Week (April 21-27).
Kinnamon has been involved with National Dance Week since 1999, having been on the board, as a grant writer and as a performer. This year three classes and 22 dancers of Kinnamon’s Te Hau Nui Polynesian Dance Company shared four numbers with the community of Santa Cruz, with a hapa haole or English theme. The performance culminated with all age levels taking the stage sharing a festive Tahitian number entitled “Pate Pate” which means to drum. MMS students Sarah Babcock (4th), Savannah Cambell (3rd), and Bella Cambell (1st) also graced the stage with Kinnamon and sister Charmaine Moniz,.
Other MMS students that danced include:
- Tabby Hardin-Zollo (4th), who danced with Tannery World Dance in the Performance Modern Class, and Raizes Do Brazil- Santa Cruz Capoeira.
- Izabella Thomas (7th), who danced a jazz performance with Santa Cruz Dance Company.
- Nicole Vince (7th), who performed hip hop and company dances with Dancenter.
- Cassie Caborn (9th), performed with Watsonville’s Steps Dance Studio.
