Rainy Weather and Mountain Driving Tips

  1. Drive slowly on wet roads – reduce speed by about 1/3 the recommended speed
  • 55=40 mph
  • 35= 25 mph
  • On Mount Madonna Road dry day= 25mph/ wet day 15 mph
  • Summit Rd dry day 35 mph/ wet day 25 mph
  1. Use a lower gear going downhill to avoid overusing brakes
  2. Stay on the right side of the road and be courteous, sharing the road with others
  3. When vehicles meet on a steep, narrow road which is not wide enough for two vehicles, the vehicle going downhill must yield the right-of-way by backing up to a wider place or by stopping to leave sufficient space for the vehicle going uphill, except where it is more practical for the vehicle going uphill to return to a wider space or turnout.
  4. Turn on headlights or fog lights
  5. Have good, properly inflated tires
  6. Have good windshield wipers
  7. Be at least 6 seconds behind the driver in front of you
  8. Yield to school buses, pedestrians, bicyclists and animals.
