Halloween Parade and Assembly

The PreK-Fifth grade students and parents are invited to come to school in costume and join in an All Elementary Halloween Assembly. The Book Fair will be open too!

  • Please have students come with their make-up/costumes already on and a change of clothes.
  • Masks or props should come in a bag or backpack and be easy for the child to take on or off.
  • Students are reminded to be especially careful not to scare our younger students with their costumes or behavior.
  • No large props or play weapons are allowed on the buses.

MMS Costume Guidelines

MMS is a K-12 school that values creativity as well as inclusivity. Students certainly should feel free to express themselves, but we hope you will guide them in choosing costumes that actively avoid ridicule of any race, nationality, religious belief or gender expression, or are too scary for young children to see. We’re not trying to take the fun out of Halloween; we’re trying to make it fun for everyone. In particular, please do not arrive on campus wearing the following:

  • Makeup designed to appear as a different race of human being
  • Wigs specific to ethnicity (for example, “afro” wigs)

These questions were put forward by the Dean of Northwestern University as a guide for choosing a costume that won’t hurt feelings:

  1. Wearing a funny costume? Is the humor based on “making fun” of real people, human traits or cultures
  2. Wearing a “cultural” costume? Does this costume reduce cultural differences to jokes or stereotypes?
  3. Could someone take offense with your costume and why?
