This year students will walk 5k (or more!) around our on-campus trails during school days leading up to April 30 with their class cohorts to raise money for the school and awareness about the environment.
We will be celebrating the 15th annual Summit for the Planet together, but separately, as we have fun activities planned for our students.
For more than 40 years, Mount Madonna has maintained a commitment of fostering global citizenship by bringing our students to understand different cultures and values. Recognizing that global citizenship encompasses a deep respect for the environment, we looked to the framework of the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide us in developing our event plans. The SDGs are an urgent global call to action by the UN who “recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”
Summit for the Planet is organized into three parts:
FUNDRAISING at SummitforthePlanet.org
Each student is challenged to raise $130 for MMS and for charities selected by each grade level. Some examples of the selected charities are Save the Whales (grade 5) and Second Harvest Food Bank (grade 2). Register and share your students’ personalized crowdfunding page at summitfortheplanet.org
SUPPORT the SDGs
Students will participate in school-organized activities to support specific SDGs.
For example, students are encouraged to participate in our canned food drive to support SDG 2: Zero Hunger. See the calendar of activities for the full line up.
WALK-A-THON and GAMES
All students will participate in a 5K (or shorter depending on grade level) with their class during the school day, and then celebrate with eco-friendly games and other activities.
Students will also be rewarded with prizes.
