Have you ever looked into your trash can and just thought, “Wow. I create a lot of garbage.” You will find that MOST of it is packaging from objects you buy at the store. An example of wasteful packaging is little plastic cups of applesauce. A solution for that would be to get one big jar. Not only are you saving the amount of garbage that leads to the land fills you are also getting more of the product. If you can reduce the amount of packaging every time you go to the grocerie store imagine what you could do to the landfills.
Do you ever wonder where your trash goes? It goes to the dump or – as some people call - the landfill. The landfill is where we put garbage that is collected from each home and business every week. Santa Cruz has two landfills one on each side of the city, and there is also one in Watsonville. You know that landfills are only so deep, and at the speed that they are filling up at now, we are going to run out of room to put our waste in. One way to help is to recycle.
Recycling is essential for many reasons. We are running out of space to put waste in landfills. We need to recycle more because the amount of trash we produce is so wasteful to our resources we are running out of them too fast. In addition, it is helping the environment by slowing down the need to dig up more raw materials. Also by recycling, we reduce air and water pollution. |
